Variation of the core lifetime and fragmentation scale in molecular clouds as an indication of ambipolar diffusion

چکیده
Ambipolar diffusion likely plays a pivotal role in the formation and evolution of dense cores weakly-ionized molecular clouds. Linear analyses show that evolutionary times fragmentation scales are significantly greater than hydrodynamic (Jeans) values even for clouds with mildly supercritical mass-to-flux ratio. We utilize growth correspond to typical ionization fractions within cloud, apply context observed estimated lifetime prestellar as well number such embedded forming parent clump. By varying single parameter, ratio, over range observationally measured densities, we fit core lifetimes ($\sim 0.1$ few Myr) identified Herschel formed clump Perseus Submillimeter Array (SMA). Our model suggests transcritical ratio higher densities somewhat but normalized $\mu$ remains $1 \lesssim \mu 2$. best-fit exhibits $B \propto n^{0.43}$ cores, due partial flux-freezing consequence ambipolar diffusion.

Tracing Turbulent Ambipolar Diffusion in Molecular Clouds
Though flux freezing is a good approximation frequently assumed for molecular clouds, ambipolar diffusion (AD) is inevitable at certain scales. The scale at which AD sets in can be a crucial parameter for turbulence and the star formation process. However, both observation and simulation of AD are very challenging and our knowledge of it is very limited. We recently proposed (Li and Houde 2008)...

construction and validation of the translation teacher competency test and the scale of students’ perceptions of translation teachers
the major purpose of this study was to develop the translation teacher competency test (ttct) and examine its construct and predictive validity. the present study was conducted in two phases: a qualitative phase as well as a quantitative phase. in the first phase of the study, the author attempted to find out the major areas of competency required for an academic translation teacher. the second...
The Inability of Ambipolar Diffusion to set a Characteristic Mass Scale in Molecular Clouds
We investigate the question of whether ambipolar diffusion (ion-neutral drift) determines the smallest length and mass scale on which structure forms in a turbulent molecular cloud. We simulate magnetized turbulence in a mostly neutral, uniformly driven, turbulent medium, using a three-dimensional, two-fluid, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) code modified from Zeus-MP. We find that substantial struct...
متن کاملThe Initial Core Mass Function due to Ambipolar Diffusion in Molecular Clouds
We show that the ambipolar-diffusion–initiated fragmentation of molecular clouds leads simply and naturally to an initial core mass function (CMF) which is very similar to the initial stellar mass function (IMF) and in excellent agreement with existing observations. This agreement is robust provided that the three (input) free parameters remain within their range of values suggested by observat...
